uncoffee

because sometimes you want to be bitter, but not buzzed.

Coffee is awesome.

But sometimes caffeine isn’t.

Decaf has gotten better over the years, but it still sometimes feels like you’re getting the runner-up in terms of flavour.

What if you could get all the refreshing bitterness of coffee – without the caffeine, acidity, or sometimes-challenging brewing technique?

Now you can!

Our Uncoffee combines naturally caffeine-free ingredients to create the ideal roasty-toasty flavour profile with none of the downsides of real coffee.

It’s perfect to enjoy hot or cold, any time of day, in all the ways you’re used to making an ordinary cuppa!

about our uncoffees

dark roast

If you’re a lover of dark, roasty, toasty coffees with a lot of chocolate, caramel, and raisin notes, you’re gonna love Dark Roast Uncoffee.

It’s bitter, yet smooth. Extremely sippable. Amazing with the milk of your choice in a rich, mellow latte…or, naturally, straight up and black as midnight.

Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff.

Ideal for fans of deep, rich roasts and French or Italian roast espresso, darker African coffees, and Sumatra or Indonesia varietals.

  • Amount: 1 heaping tablespoon per cup (150-200 ml; 6-8oz)
  • Temperature: 100°C (boiling)
  • Time:8-10 minutes or even longer for a richer brew – up to 20 minutes!
  • Cold-brew by infusing overnight

light roast

Like a lighter coffee, with more caramel or citrus than roasty-chocolatey notes?

Try a Light Roast Uncoffee!

There’s less bitterness than in a Dark Roast Uncoffee – or a cup of traditional light roast real-coffee. But you’ll still get that bracing bitter with no acid, a super-smooth finish, and a little brightness.

Ideal for fans of lighter city roasts, or full-on light roast aficionados who like their coffee bright, citrusy, and perky. Like a fruity Guatemala or a lemony Kenya? Give a Light Roast Uncoffee a shot!

  • Amount: 1 heaping tablespoon per cup (150-200 ml; 6-8oz)
  • Temperature: 100°C (boiling)
  • Time:8-10 minutes or even longer for a richer brew – up to 20 minutes!
  • Cold-brew by infusing overnight

Remember: Whatever tastes right is the right brew for you!

secret brewing formula

2T + 150ml + 100C + 15min = yum

You can brew Uncoffee pretty much any way you’d brew regular ol’ coffee – we prefer a really long steep in a French press or cafetiere, but you can use a moka pot, pour-over/Chemex, or even a drip machine!

Feeling lazy? Simmer your Uncoffee on the stove and wander away for awhile. It’ll turn out delicious, with less than no fuss.

Heck, you can even brew it in a tea strainer if you really want.

You might want to use a little more Uncoffee than regular, grind it finer, or steep it longer, but that’s up to individual tastes.

The great thing is, Uncoffee is super-forgiving. You pretty much can’t overbrew it.

No, seriously. We love it steeped for up to 20 minutes.

Just walk away and come back when you’re done with whatever. You’re gonna be rewarded with a smooth, rich, deeply delicious cuppa caffeine-free goodness.

detailed instructions

coffee-style brewing

Use two heaping tablespoons (2T) for one cup (150-200ml; 6-8oz).

Put the Uncoffee right into your French press or cafetiere, then pour in boiling water (100C).

Stir.

Let steep for 10-15 minutes…or even longer!

You’re not going to go wrong here – you won’t get nasty bitter, burnt, acid notes from over-steeping Uncoffee, unlike the regular stuff.

Plunge, pour, and enjoy.

Did your Uncoffee get cold? No worries – enjoy iced or just reheat gently. Again, no worries about nasty burnt off tastes with this brew!

Pour-over coffee is having its day—it’s a great way to control the time and temperature you steep. Malted barley brew doesn’t need quite the same lavish treatment, as it actually benefits from a longer steeping time, but there’s nothing quite like pour-over for getting the essence of the brew out.

To make pour-over barley brew, just add 4 heaping tablespoons to a paper filter in your pour-over device of choice (Chemex, Melitta, etc.). Pour over 150ml water just off the boil, let filter, and enjoy.

Believe it or not, you can brew our coffee alternatives right in your regular drip machine like standard coffee!

We recommend pulsing it a few times in a spice grinder or mini food processor just to make sure your brew is the same consistency as drip coffee grounds – it’ll still brew otherwise, but you’ll get a more flavourful cuppa if you grind first.

Use 2 heaping tablespoons of Novel Tastes malted barley “alt-coffee” per cup (150-200 ml; 6-8oz). Put the alt-coffee in the machine’s filter basket, add the water like usual, and brew as normal!

Enjoy black, with the milk of your choice, or lightly sweetened.

Grind your Uncoffee extra-fine using a coffee grinder, high-speed blender, or mini food processor.

(this isn’t strictly necessary, but it helps!)

Or, you know, just buy Moka Pot / Espresso grind. That works too!

Fill the grounds reservoir of your moka pot with Uncoffee, tamping gently but not packing down.

Fill the water chamber. Drop in the grounds reservoir. Screw the whole shebang together.

Heat on the stovetop as usual until everything perks up.

Drink straight up or top with heated and/or foamed milk of your choice.

lazy uncoffee brewing

Grab a nice, deep saucepan.

Add two heaping tablespoons (2T) of Uncoffee for every cup (150-200ml; 6-8oz) of water.

Pour the water into the saucepan, turn the heat up to High, and stir in your Uncoffee.

Bring the mixture up to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

Simmer 5-10 minutes, then turn off the heat.

You can either strain and enjoy piping hot, or let the brew hang out on the stovetop for as long as you like.

Whenever you’re ready to drink, strain into your mug and enjoy!

Drink it black, sweetened to your preference (we love a touch of maple syrup), or with a splash of the milk of your choice.

You’re not going to go wrong here – you won’t get nasty bitter, burnt, acid notes from over-steeping Uncoffee, unlike the regular stuff.

Got some left over? Just pour into a jug or bottle and pop into the fridge! You can enjoy it iced later on, or heat it back up. Trust us, it’ll still be tasty!

Grab your trusty French press.

Add two heaping tablespoons (2T) of Uncoffee for every cup (150-200ml; 6-8oz) of water.

No French press? No problem!

Use two heaping tablespoons for one cup (150-200ml; 6-8oz) and steep in boiling water (100C) for 10-15 minutes using your favourite teapot or steeping device. Yes, that’s a lot more—for both amount and time—than for traditional tea or coffee. But trust us; your patience will be rewarded with a rich, roasty cuppa!

If cold-brewed coffee is good, cold-brewed Uncoffee is great! Cold barley brew has been enjoyed in Korea and Japan for millennia – it’s slightly sweet, malty, and super-refreshing on a hot day.

It takes a little time, but it’s as easy as can be. Just put half a cup of Uncoffee into a jug, bowl, French press pot, or other holding vessel. Pour 1 liter of cold water over top, making sure to completely soak the grounds.

Cover and let sit for 24 hours. Uncover and strain, filtering the delicious elixir into a bottle—or straight into your cup.

This is a particularly great brew to drink in summer; pop the bottle into the fridge after you strain and enjoy chilled, either plain or with a splash of milk (we love oat or cashew milk for this).

Oh, and you can store your premade brew in the fridge and serve it hot or cold later. How easy is that?
